Joseph Avery
DIRECTOR / PROGRAM DESIGN / BATTERY ARRANGER
Joseph Avery is a band director, percussion educator, active composer/designer and drill writer out of the Central Valley California area, specializing in battery technique and percussion performance. Receiving his degree in Music Education from California State University, Fresno, he is an alum of the Bulldog Marching Band, Red Wave’s parent program.
Joseph is currently the Associate Director of Bands for Buchanan Educational Center, which includes Buchanan High School and Alta Sierra Intermediate (Clovis, Ca.). He is also the percussion caption head and arranger for Fresno State’s Bulldog Marching Band. Joseph has worked with, choreographed, written, designed, consulted, and taught for a multitude of high schools and middle schools on the West Coast since 2007.
Joseph’s performance in the percussion community has taken place both indoors and outdoors with Carolina Crown, Sacramento Freelancers Indoor, and the Concord Blue Devils organization. He proudly endorses Innovative Percussion, Remo, Yamaha, and Zildjian as an educational artist.
Joseph currently resides in Madera, California with his wife Stephanie, daughter Adeline, and two dogs, Remington and Aida.
Albert Avery
FRONT ENSEMBLE ARRANGER / SOUND DESIGN / MEDIA
Albert is a designer, writer and educator from in the Central Valley. He has received his B.S. in Business Administration - Computer Information Systems from California State University, Fresno. Outside of the marching arts, Albert focuses on community management and social media engagement.. He is also currently working at Universal Audio full-time as a Technical Customer Support specialist.
In the marching arts, he is a front ensemble arranger, instructor and electronic designer for Clovis High School. In addition, he is the sound engineer and front ensemble arranger for the Fresno State Bulldog Marching band, along with being the front ensemble arranger, sound designer, and media manager for Red Wave Indoor, Fresno State's independent world percussion ensemble in the Central Valley.
He continues to write for various ensembles in the Central Valley, along with being a consultant specializing in amplification, electronics, and sound design for the marching arts.
Albert proudly endorses Vic Firth Sticks/Mallets, and Zildjian Cymbals.
Albert lives in Clovis, CA.
Jaime Holly
DRILL / DESIGN
Jaime Holly is a full time drill designer and visual instructor living in Long Beach, CA with his wife Rebekah and daughter Parker. He began his marching career in the soprano line of the Concord Blue Devil B Corps in 1989, moving to the World Champion A Corps in 1991 through 1993. He returned to the Blue Team in 1997 where he is currently a visual instructor and drill writer.
His affinity for mathematical problems can be traced through his BS from Fresno State in Math. Jaime earned a teaching credential from Cal State Hayward and was a math teacher at James Logan High School before he decided to give it up for the fame and fortune of drill writing.
Jaime is the visual caption head and designer for several award winning high schools in BOA and WBA, as well as independent non-profit organizations in DCI and WGI. He has also served on the DCI Task Force. Currently, he has the pleasure of working with the Soka Renaissance Vanguard from Tokyo, Japan.
Some of the groups he has had the opportunity to work with are: Blue Coats Drum and Bugle Corps, Mystikal Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, Upland High School, Fountain Valley High School, Legacy High School, Haltom High School, Colleyville Heritage High School, Desert Vista High School, Winston Churchill High School, Clovis West High School, James Logan High School, Freelancers Indoor Drumline, Black Knights Indoor Drumline, and the El Diamonte Indoor Colorguard.
Spencer Garcia
SNARE TECHNICIAN
Spencer is a percussion educator, active composer/designer in the Clovis California Area, specializing in battery technique and performance. Outside the marching arts, Spencer received a B.A. in History from California State University, Fresno and is currently earning a teaching credential to become an elementary school teacher.
Spencer is currently the Percussion Caption Head for the Clovis High Area which includes Clovis High School, Clark Intermediate School, and The Blue Diddles Elementary Percussion Academy. Spencer has worked with a multitude of schools and programs throughout the Central Valley including the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band.
Spencer's performance experience in the marching arts has taken place both indoors and outdoors with the Sacramento Mandarins, The Academy, Blue Devils B, Pulse Percussion, and Valley Independent Percussion. He proudly endorses Vic Firth Sticks/Mallets as an educational artist.
Spencer currently resides in Clovis California.
Austin Ballard
SNARE TECHNICIAN
This will be Austin’s first year on staff with Red Wave. He has been involved with various percussion programs for the past seven years, since graduating from Tulare Western High School in 2014. Most recently he worked with Buchanan High School as a snare tech, and currently works as the percussion caption head at Hanford West High School. Austin has performed with The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps (2014-2017) and POW Percussion (2018-2019) where he served as the section leader for the 2019 season.
Austin graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Mathematics. Outside of music, Austin currently teaches 7th and 8th grade math in Visalia, CA.
Ray Rivera
TENOR TECHNICIAN
Ray Rivera graduated from Tulare Union High School in 2012. He marched Valley Independent Percussion in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2015 and 2016 Ray served as the tenor drums section leader. Ray also marched Blue Devils B Corps in the summers of 2015 and as section leader in 2016. For his last season in 2017, Ray marched in Bakersfield College Indoor.
Ray has taught throughout the central valley for the past 8 years for schools that include Live Oak Middle School, Exeter Union High School, Buchanan High School, Glacier Point Middle School, Reyburn Intermediate, Central High School, and Clovis East High School. He also is currently on staff at Blue Devils B as their quad tech. Ray is currently a student at Fresno City College majoring in Music Education and Mathematics. He plans to transfer to Fresno State to continue his work towards a degree.
Horacio Gutierrez
TENOR TECHNICIAN / MEDIA
Horacio is back for his 2nd season teaching the art tenor drumming as well as creating media content for Red Wave Indoor. He brings 10+ years of tenor drumming experience, and is also the creative director for Quadlogix Media.
Ricky Garza
BASS TECHNICIAN
Ricky graduated from Buchanan High School in 2016 and would continue his musical career teaching and performing for several groups. He spent his next 4 years marching with groups such as Red Wave, Fresno State Marching Band, POW Percussion, Sacramento Mandarins, and finally Pulse Percussion.
During this time he would be a Bass Tech at Buchanan High School for 5 consecutive years and Sanger High School for a year. Currently, Ricky just started teaching his first year at Clovis West High School and his 2nd year with Hanford West High School. This will be Ricky’s first year teaching Red Wave Indoor.

Marcus Zellous
VISUAL TECHNICIAN / CHOREOGRAPHER
Marcus is in his fifth season as a part of the Red Wave staff as a visual technician and choreographer. He is currently a music teacher in Lemoore, California as an elementary band and choir teacher. He obtained his music education degree from Fresno State University, and his teaching credential - as well as his masters of arts in education - from Fresno Pacific University.
Marcus has taught and/or choreographed for numerous indoor and outdoor ensembles in the Central Valley, including Lemoore HS, Liberty Middle School, Golden West HS, Bullard HS, Edison HS, Washington Union HS, Clovis HS, Clovis East HS, Buchanan HS, Kingsburg HS, Clovis North HS, and Valley Independent Percussion. He was a part of the teaching staff for the inaugural Red Wave season (and the subsequent seasons). Beyond California, Marcus has choreographed for Victor J. Andrew HS indoor percussion of Tinley Park, Illinois, and Leonardtown High School of Leonardtown, Maryland.
As an instructor for the United Spirit Association drum major staff, Marcus taught military and mace spinning, field conducting, and leadership to middle school and high school students in California, Oregon, and Washington from 2001-2006. He also served as the drum major choreographer for the USA All Star Drum Majors for the London New Year’s Day Parade in 2006. Further drum major experience includes Lemoore HS (1998-2000), Fresno State (2002-2004), and Fever Drum and Bugle Corps (2005).
Outside of the band world, Marcus serves as the Communications Director at South Valley Community Church in Lemoore, and operates social media for the church.
Marcus lives in Lemoore with his wife, Deanna, and their daughter, Adelina. They enjoy traveling, musicals, being foodies, and serving in ministry.

Travis McDonald
FRONT ENSEMBLE TECHNICIAN
Travis is a percussion instructor hailing from Fresno, CA. Travis began his percussion journey at Reyburn Intermediate, followed by graduating from Clovis East HS in 2016. After graduation, Travis began teaching at his alma mater for two years as well becoming the front ensemble caption head for Reyburn. Travis has also had the pleasure of working with other marching ensembles in the Central Valley including Abraham Lincoln MS , Selma HS, and Clovis West HS. This will be Travis’ first season on staff with Red Wave Indoor as a front ensemble instructor.
As well performing with Clovis East, Travis joined Red Wave Indoor for their inaugural season in 2017, and then again in 2019. Travis also performed in 2018 with Dark Sky Percussion. Travis currently holds an A.S. in Commercial Music Business and is currently working towards his B.S. in Business Information Systems.
Gabriella Stempien
FRONT ENSEMBLE TECHNICIAN
Gabriella graduated from Clovis High School in 2017. While there, they were apart of an intensive studio studying concert and indoor percussion. Gabriella traveled and preformed in World Championships for indoor percussion, FMCMEA, Reno Jazz Festival, and FOOSA. They also studied with percussion directors Joseph Avery and Micheal Downing.
Gabriella has been apart of Red Wave for the years 2019-2021 playing marimba and xylophone. They currently teach at high schools in the central valley including Buchanan High School, Alta Sierra Middle School, and Hanford West High School. In the past they have also taught at Clovis West High school, and Orosi High School.
Gabriella currently studies Studio Art at California State University, Fresno. Their time is spent managing their own small business, selling art, and doing local pop up events.
