DESIGN
Joseph Avery
DIRECTOR / PROGRAM DESIGN / BATTERY ARRANGER
Joseph Avery is a band director, percussion educator, active composer/designer and drill writer out of the Central Valley California area, specializing in battery technique and percussion performance. Receiving his degree in Music Education from California State University, Fresno, he is an alum of the Bulldog Marching Band, Red Wave’s parent program.
Joseph is currently the Associate Director of Bands for Buchanan Educational Center, which includes Buchanan High School and Alta Sierra Intermediate (Clovis, CA.). He is also the percussion caption head and arranger for Fresno State’s Bulldog Marching Band. Joseph has worked with, choreographed, written, designed, consulted, and taught for a multitude of high schools and middle schools on the West Coast since 2007.
Joseph’s performance in the percussion community has taken place both indoors and outdoors with Carolina Crown, Sacramento Freelancers Indoor, and the Concord Blue Devils organization. He proudly endorses Innovative Percussion, Remo, Yamaha, and Zildjian as an educational artist.
Joseph currently resides in Madera, California with his wife Stephanie, daughter Adeline, and two dogs, Remington and Aida.
Albert Avery
FRONT ENSEMBLE ARRANGER / SOUND DESIGN / MEDIA
Albert is a designer, writer and educator from the Central Valley. He has received his B.S. in Business Administration - Computer Information Systems from California State University, Fresno. Outside of the marching arts, Albert focuses on community management and social media engagement.. He is also currently working at Universal Audio full-time as a Technical Customer Support specialist.
In the marching arts, he is a front ensemble caption head, arranger and electronic designer for Clovis High School. In addition, he is the sound engineer and front ensemble arranger for the Fresno State Bulldog Marching band, along with being the front ensemble arranger, sound designer, and media manager for Red Wave Indoor, Fresno State's independent world percussion ensemble in the Central Valley.
He continues to write for various ensembles in the Central Valley, along with being a consultant specializing in amplification, electronics, and sound design for the marching arts.
Albert proudly endorses Vic Firth Sticks/Mallets, and Zildjian Cymbals.
Albert lives in Clovis, CA.
Jaime Holly
DRILL / DESIGN
Jaime Holly is a full time drill designer and visual instructor living in Long Beach, CA with his wife Rebekah and daughter Parker. He began his marching career in the soprano line of the Concord Blue Devil B Corps in 1989, moving to the World Champion A Corps in 1991 through 1993. He returned to the Blue Team in 1997 where he is currently a visual instructor and drill writer.
His affinity for mathematical problems can be traced through his BS from Fresno State in Math. Jaime earned a teaching credential from Cal State Hayward and was a math teacher at James Logan High School before he decided to give it up for the fame and fortune of drill writing.
Jaime is the visual caption head and designer for several award winning high schools in BOA and WBA, as well as independent non-profit organizations in DCI and WGI. He has also served on the DCI Task Force. Currently, he has the pleasure of working with the Soka Renaissance Vanguard from Tokyo, Japan.
Some of the groups he has had the opportunity to work with are: Blue Coats Drum and Bugle Corps, Mystikal Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, Upland High School, Fountain Valley High School, Legacy High School, Haltom High School, Colleyville Heritage High School, Desert Vista High School, Winston Churchill High School, Clovis West High School, James Logan High School, Freelancers Indoor Drumline, Black Knights Indoor Drumline, and the El Diamonte Indoor Colorguard.
BATTERY
Austin Ballard
BATTERY COORDINATOR
This will be Austin’s second year on staff with Red Wave. He has been involved with various percussion programs in the Central Valley for the past eight years, since graduating from Tulare Western High School. Most recently he worked with Buchanan High School as a snare tech, and currently works as the percussion caption head at Hanford West High School. Austin has performed with The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps (2014-2017) and POW Percussion (2018-2019) where he served as the section leader for the 2019 season.
Austin graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Mathematics. Outside of music, Austin currently teaches 7th and 8th grade math in Visalia, CA.
Ariane Ortiz
SNARE TECHNICIAN
Ariane graduated in 2016 from Clovis High School. While there, she was involved in their marching and concert studios. She had the opportunity to participate in WGI Championships with them. After graduation, Ariane continued her marching career with several groups: Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band, Orange County Independent, Vessel Percussion, Red Wave Indoor, and Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corp.
During her marching endeavors, she also began her teaching career. She has taught at Edison High School and Clark Intermediate. She currently works at Clovis High School as a Snare Tech. She’s been on staff with Clovis High School for the past two years.
Ariane is currently a student at California State University, Fresno. She is in the process of getting her B.A. in Business - Finance.
Justin Clement
SNARE TECHNICIAN
Justin grew up in the Central Valley and graduated from James C. Enochs High School in 2017. Since then, he has spent his time as a percussion instructor at Murrieta Valley High School while simultaneously going to school and continuing his marching career in Southern California.
Justin’s performance experience spans from coast to coast and includes Blue Knights, Carolina Crown, and Broken City Percussion. This will be Justin’s first year on staff with Red Wave.
Ray Rivera
TENOR TECHNICIAN
Ray’s marching career began at Valley Independent Percussion in 2012 and continued from 2014-2016. In the summers of 2015 and 2016 Ray marched with Blue Devils B. In 2017 he aged out with Bakersfield College Indoor.
Besides marching, Ray has been teaching various middle school and high schools in the central valley since 2012. Some of the schools include Exeter HS, Buchanan HS, Clovis East HS, Central HS with Ray currently serving as percussion caption head at Tulare Union HS and El Diamante HS. Ray also spent the summer of 2019 on staff with Blue Devils B and has been on staff with Red Wave since 2019 as well.
Ray is currently attending Fresno State studying Mathematics with the intention to teach in the Central Valley.
Tyler Ortiz
TENOR TECHNICIAN
Tyler Ortiz graduated from Clovis High School in 2016. He marched in Red Wave Indoor’s inaugural year in 2017. He also marched at Vessel Indoor in 2018, 2019, and 2020 as well as the Sacramento Mandarins in 2019. Tyler has previously taught at Yosemite High School and Clark Intermediate. He is currently teaching at Clovis High School. This is Tyler’s first year teaching at Red Wave Indoor.
Outside of music Tyler graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Sciences and Deaf Studies - Interpreting. He is currently employed at California State University, Fresno as an Interpreter for the Deaf. He is currently pursuing National Interpreter Certification (NIC).
Zack Potter
BASS TECHNICIAN
Zack is returning to Red Wave for his 4th year on staff. Zack has several years of experience teaching bass drum in the Clovis area since 2014. His marching experience includes Valley Independent Percussion, Orange County Independent Percussion, Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, and Pulse Percussion.
Zack has his Bachelor’s Degree in Media Communications and works as a Project Manager right here at Fresno State. He is also currently a bass drum instructor at Clovis High School.
Kevin Kingkham
BASS TECHNICIAN
This will be Kevin’s first year on staff with Red Wave. Kevin graduated from Clovis East High School in 2017 and has been involved with the activity since 2011. After graduation, Kevin began teaching at Clovis North High School as a Bass Drum Technician from 2017-2019. Kevin has worked summer clinics with Buchanan High School from 2019-2021. Kevin has marched Red Wave from 2018-2020 and 2022 and served as section leader during his last two seasons.
Kevin is currently a student at California State University, Northridge pursuing a B.A. in Liberal Studies with specialization in History/Social Science and will be graduating in Fall 2022. Kevin plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in School Counseling in the near future.
Hannah Boyer
CYMBAL TECHNICIAN
Hannah is from Modesto, CA where she graduated from Beyer High School in 2008. After high school, she went on to march mellophone in the Blue Devils B corps in 2009, and cymbals in the Vanguard Winter Percussion from 2010 to 2012. She also spent two years in the Fresno State Marching Band and participated in the Santa Clara Vanguard Alumni Corps in 2017.
Since graduating, Hannah has taught and designed throughout the Central Valley, but has spent the majority of her career at Beyer & Enochs High School. This will be Hannah’s fifth season with Red Wave Indoor. Aside from RWI, she spends her summer with BDB.
Hannah currently works as a paraprofessional in an autism program in Modesto and is pursuing her degree in child development to become a special education teacher.
Cameron Baber
CYMBAL TECHNICIAN
Cameron Baber is a student, performer, and music educator from the Central Valley. He is currently pursuing a degree in instrumental music education at California State University Fresno and hopes to become a high school band director after completing his teaching credential. Cameron is heavily involved in both the worlds of winds and percussion and has performed with groups such as Red Wave Indoor, the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band, Wind Symphony of Clovis, and Fresno State Wind Orchestra.
Cameron currently instructs at Clovis High School as a music/visual staff member for the marching band and has also instructed at a variety of other competitive Central Valley music programs such as Clovis North Educational Center and Buchanan High School.
Cameron is thrilled to be returning to Red Wave this year in a teaching capacity and hopes to help the program continue its growth and success in the coming years.

Marcus Zellous
VISUAL / CHOREOGRAPHER / SOCIAL MEDIA
Marcus is in his sixth season as a part of the visual staff with Red Wave Indoor, and his second season as a part of the social media team.
He is a music educator with the Lemoore Union Elementary School District teaching 4th-8th grade instrumental music, and has served in multiple locations as a visual designer, choreographer, consultant, and instructor in the Kings, Tulare, and Fresno counties. He has also served as a parade drum major clinician in the Central Valley, and was on the drum major staff for the United Spirit Association in the early 2000s.
Marcus attended California State University (Fresno) as a saxophonist, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in music education - during which time, he served as a drum major for the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band (2002, 2003, 2004), and for Fever Drum and Bugle Corps of Modesto (2005). He continued on to Fresno Pacific University where he earned his single-subject teaching credential, as well as his master’s degree in teaching.
In addition to his involvement in the marching arts, Marcus serves as the Director of Communication and Social Media at South Valley Community Church in Lemoore.
Marcus has been married to his wife, Deanna, for three years, and they have a lovely daughter, Adelina (Addy) who is turning two in November of 2022. They have a passion for food, for spending time with people, binging various shows, and consuming copious amounts of Crumbl cookies.
K. K. Rasmussen
VISUAL / CHOREOGRAPHER
K.K. Rasmussen is an Instrumental Performing Arts Visual Designer and Instructor. She began teaching in 2013 and has been heavily involved in the arts ever since. K.K. currently designs and instructs for high school and collegiate level groups in a variety of seasons, activities, and circuits. She has had the opportunity to learn and perform in several exceptional groups including Blue Devils (2013-15) and RCC (2016).
Joey Martinez
VISUAL / CHOREOGRAPHER
Joey Martinez has served as a battery & visual technician for many World Class ensembles: As a tech he taught the Phantom Regiment from 2014-2018, Blue Stars in 2019, and has been with The Cavaliers since 2020. During the winter, he served as a bass tech for Pulse Percussion from ‘14-‘20 but now helps in an admin role as the Treasurer of the Board for Pulse, Inc. He also helped with Red Wave during their inaugural season in 2017.
His performance experience includes BDB ‘08, Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps ‘09-’11, Freelancers 2010, RCC Winter Percussion Ensemble ‘11 & ‘13 and Pulse Percussion in ‘12 all on bass drum. Joey has a BA in Business Accountancy from Fresno State as well as a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Business & a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) also from Fresno State. He is currently a classroom teacher at Clovis West High School teaching CTE Banking & Finance. He serves as the Percussion Caption Head for Fall and Winter at Clovis West as well.

Front Ensemble
Travis McDonald
FRONT ENSEMBLE TECHNICIAN
Travis is an active percussion educator in the Fresno/Clovis area. Travis is currently a front ensemble tech for Clovis HS and is excited to return to Red Wave for his second season as front ensemble staff. Travis’ previous education experience includes serving roles as both front ensemble technician and sound engineer for ensembles including Red Wave Indoor, Clovis West HS, Clovis East HS and Selma HS.
Travis was a charter member in the front ensemble for Red Wave’s inaugural season. In addition to his time with Red Wave, Travis was also a member of Dark Sky Percussion. Outside of the marching arts, Travis also has a background in concert percussion, having performed with the Fresno City College Percussion Ensemble and Wind Ensemble, and the Fresno State University Percussion Ensemble, while earning his A.S. in Commercial Music Studies from Fresno City College.
Mark Tripp
FRONT ENSEMBLE TECHNICIAN
Mark graduated from Clovis High School in 2018. While attending, he participated in their second year attending WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. After high school, continued his marching career playing in various notable ensembles such as Blue Devils B, Dark Sky percussion where he was able to perform in finals, and finished his marching career with Red Wave Indoor with their first year in world class. Mark has been teaching in the Central Valley for 5 years, starting his teaching career at Edison High and now at Clovis East High School for the past 4 years as the Front Ensemble Tech and writer/arranger. This will be Mark’s first year teaching with Red Wave Indoor.
